Parco Val Calanca

Regional nature park since 2024

The Parco Val Calanca is one of the smallest nature parks in Switzerland, but with a big heart - just like the heart-shaped lake «Lago di Calvaresc».

A small valley open to the south and protected to the north by mountains over 3'000 m high characterises the sunny valley of Val Calanca. A wild and natural environment where the villages built in stone and wood have preserved their character for centuries. A unique flora and fauna displaying a very rich biodiversity. Terraces and mule trails are also typical of the region as well as the majestic larch trees - old enough to be a historical memory for all of Europe.

The river landscape at the bottom of the valley, shaped by the crystalline waters of the Calancasca, is partly still in its natural state, and recent renaturation works have created important alluvial areas. The historic buildings are extremely well preserved, so much so that 5 villages are listed in the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites, and 39 other buildings such as churches, chapels, dwellings and ossuaries are included in the inventory of cultural property. Art and culture aren't left behind: the Swisshouse as well as the works of various artists can testify to that, such as the colours and forms of David Tremlett who repainted the walls of the three 17th century chapels in the village of Rossa. A journey of travel and experiences with plenty of surprises and joy awaits!

Two villages, Braggio and Landarenca, are only accessible by cable car. On these terraces, the landscape is cared for by motivated farmers, and their positive energy is just waiting to be transmitted, for example whilst enjoying a typical dish from an authentic and traditional restaurant.

The Parco Val Calanca is the smallest regional nature park in Switzerland, but it has a heart as big as Lake Calvaresc, whose distinctive shape is reflected in the logo
