Naturpark Beverin
Regional nature park since 2013
Four valleys, two cultures, one park - known for its deep gorges, intact villages, the churches that are distinctive landmarks, clear mountain lakes and the majestic ibexes which are also known as capricorns.
Home of the ibexes
The area of the Beverin Nature Park expands around the Piz Beverin (2998 m above sea level). The park comprises four valleys and two historically and linguistically different cultures. On the one hand, the Safiental, the Tschappina and the Rheinwald valleys with their scattered houses and lively Walser culture and on the other hand, the Rhaeto-Romans in Schams with their compact settlements and alpine dairies in the village.
The nine municipalities of the Park (Andeer, Ferrera, Muntogna da Schons, Rheinwald, Rongellen, Safiental, Sufers, Tschappina and Zillis-Reischen) have joined forces and strive for sustainable economic and social development. Together, they uphold valuable natural and cultural assets, strengthen the local economy and promote cultural and eco-tourism.
The three gorges in the Park constitute its impressive natural assets and have a decisive influence on the four valleys. The notorious Viamala Gorge is the northern gateway to Val Schons. Its name is history: "veias malas" - "bad paths"; for centuries, the foaming Hinterrhein deep down has been a dangerous obstacle for travellers on their way south. The access from the Val Schons into the Rheinwald and Val Ferrera is formed by the Roffla Gorge, with its impressive path to the thundering waterfall. The Beverin Nature Park also comprises a part of the Rhine Gorge - Grand Canyon of the Alps.
